Social Media IS Security Concerns
Nike addresses Social Media Information System (SMIS) security concerns by implementing internal monitoring, controlled account access, and clear communication guidelines. The company protects its official social media accounts by limiting access to trained marketing and communications employees and using authentication and monitoring tools to prevent unauthorized posts or security breaches. Nike also monitors its social media platforms to detect misinformation, harmful comments, or suspicious activity that could damage the brand.
Nike does have a social media policy for employees. Employees are expected to follow professional standards when posting online, even on personal accounts. The policy encourages employees to avoid sharing confidential company information, respect intellectual property, and represent the brand responsibly. These guidelines help prevent reputational risks and protect company data.
Nike manages inappropriate content and unfavorable reviews through active moderation and customer engagement. Offensive or abusive comments may be removed from official pages, while negative feedback from customers is often addressed publicly by customer support teams. Responding to complaints quickly helps maintain trust and demonstrates accountability. In many cases, Nike directs customers to private messages or support channels to resolve issues more effectively.
A clear example can be seen on Nike’s YouTube social media platform. On the official Nike YouTube Channel, Nike regularly posts campaign videos and product launches. In the comments section, the company allows open discussion but moderates spam, hate speech, or inappropriate content. For instance, when users leave negative feedback about product quality or shipping delays, Nike’s team sometimes replies with support information or directs them to customer service. This approach allows Nike to maintain a positive brand image while still engaging with its online community.
